It's Skyrim, it's freezing, and it's highly unlikely your female character would run around in skimpy chain-mail armor without getting frostbite or getting her belly split open by a rampaging bandit.
That said many people will try to be realistic as possible. With that said, I might have an answer on this whole thing now. Very rarely will you see a youtuber showcase an armor mod for females that isn't skimpy or flat out unrealistic. When I get a new PC and I'm able to mod Skyrim, first thing I'll do is make custom armors for females. I genuinely have no clue as to why it is the way it is.
